Students with special needs

Students with Learning Disabilities

Learning disabled students are those who demonstrate a significant discrepancy, which is not the result of some other handicap, between academic achievement and intellectual abilities in one or more of the areas of oral expression, listening comprehension, written expression, basic reading skills, reading comprehension, mathematical calculation, mathematics reasoning, or spelling.

Following is a list of some of the common indicators of learning disabled students. These traits are usually not isolated ones; rather, they appear in varying degrees and amounts in most learning disabled students. A learning disabled student …
  • Has poor auditory memory—both short term and long term.
  • Has a low tolerance level and a high frustration level.
  • Has a weak or poor self-esteem.
  • Is easily distractible.
  • Finds it difficult, if not impossible, to stay on task for extended periods of time.
  • Is spontaneous in expression; often cannot control emotions.
  • Is easily confused.
  • Is verbally demanding.
  • Has some difficulty in working with others in small or large group settings.
  • Has difficulty in following complicated directions or remembering directions for extended periods of time.
  • Has coordination problems with both large and small muscle groups.
  • Has inflexibility of thought; is difficult to persuade otherwise.
  • Has poor handwriting skills.
  • Has a poor concept of time.
Teaching learning disabled youngsters will present you with some unique and distinctive challenges. Not only will these students demand more of your time and patience; so, too, will they require specialized instructional strategies in a structured environment that supports and enhances their learning potential. It is important to remember that learning disabled students are not students who are incapacitated or unable to learn; rather, they need differentiated instruction tailored to their distinctive learning abilities. Use these appropriate strategies with learning disabled students:
  • Provide oral instruction for students with reading disabilities. Present tests and reading materials in an oral format so the assessment is not unduly influenced by lack of reading ability.
  • Provide learning disabled students with frequent progress checks. Let them know how well they are progressing toward an individual or class goal.
  • Give immediate feedback to learning disabled students. They need to see quickly the relationship between what was taught and what was learned.
  • Make activities concise and short, whenever possible. Long, drawn-out projects are particularly frustrating for a learning disabled child.
  • Learning disabled youngsters have difficulty learning abstract terms and concepts. Whenever possible, provide them with concrete objects and events—items they can touch, hear, smell, etc.
  • Learning disabled students need and should get lots of specific praise. Instead of just saying, “You did well,” or “I like your work,” be sure you provide specific praising comments that link the activity directly with the recognition; for example, “I was particularly pleased by the way in which you organized the rock collection for Karin and Miranda.”
  • When necessary, plan to repeat instructions or offer information in both written and verbal formats. Again, it is vitally necessary that learning disabled children utilize as many of their sensory modalities as possible.
  • Encourage cooperative learning activities (see Teaching with Cooperative Learning) when possible. Invite students of varying abilities to work together on a specific project or toward a common goal. Create an atmosphere in which a true “community of learners” is facilitated and enhanced.

children's healthcare

When you want the very best for your child, choose Children's Health Care of Port Huron for all of your child's medical needs.

Children’s Health Care has provided quality health care in the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire communities for 43 years. We have become a highly recognized pediatric practice, but continue to strive to improve ourselves and the services we can provide to our families. One of the things that sets us apart from other pediatric practices in the area is our on-site consulting staff. We have a Special Care Coordinator that is available to assist our families with their child’s complex care needs including educational issues. Additionally a pediatric nutritionist is available to provide support and guidance to our families regarding healthy living and proper nutrition.  We’re proud of our close relationships with the community and with the patients we serve. We look forward to a long, healthy relationship with you and your family.

Special Care

Special Care serves children, with and without special needs, through year-round, high-quality early childhood education, specialized care and on-site therapeutic services. Our mission is to nurture all children with and without special needs in safe, inclusive and supportive environments through education, therapeutic intervention and community acceptance.
With an average three adults in each of our 12 classrooms (a 4:1 student-teacher ratio) and twelve therapists working with children, many children who attend Special Care surpass the development predicted for them, some in significant and remarkable ways. On-site occupational, physical, speech and behavioral therapy gives families a “one-stop” opportunity to meet the needs of their child or children. Therapists, teachers, children, and parents work together to create activities, environments, and communication habits that best suit each child’s development. Barriers such as inaccessible equipment, social isolation, teachers without specialized training in special education, difficulty of transportation from school to after-school care, and limited therapeutic intervention often affect this population. Our program removes these barriers for our children and their families.
We divide our program into three components: Early Childhood Education, Specialized Care and On-site Therapeutic Services.
Early Childhood Education – Special Care provides high–quality, year-round early childhood education to 135 children ages birth to five. Research has shown that the early years in a child’s life—when the human brain is forming—represent a critically important window of opportunity to develop a child’s full potential and shape key academic, social, and cognitive skills that determine a child’s success in school and in life. At Special Care, we provide young children with the tools they need for future school and life success. Our program is nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and AdvancED. We provide a Lead Teacher (with at least a Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Early Childhood Education or Special Education) as well as two Assistant Teachers, creating very low student to teacher ratios. Our integrative program provides unique opportunities for both children with special needs and typical children. Both populations gain experiences they otherwise would not and develop more fully cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally.
Specialized Care – Special Care provides year-round before and after care for students, ages birth to 21 years of age (66 students). We also provide all-day summer and holiday programs for school-aged students. In typical childcare settings, a child would “age out” of their program around 10-12 years of age, when the child could presumably be of age to stay by him/herself. Due to the diverse needs of the children we serve at Special Care, they are not able to be left unattended or care for themselves while their caregiver is at work. The students we serve have significant needs and our staff are trained to meet those needs on a daily basis.
On-site Therapeutic Services – Special Care provides on-site physical, occupational, speech and behavioral therapy to our students. Therapy is critical for children with special needs in order to reach their full potential. With 11 therapists, students are able to receive high-quality therapy when they attend Special Care. Therapists are able to work with teachers to be able to bring what a student is working on in therapy to the classroom. With their children receiving therapies at Special Care, families are able to go home and spend time with one another, rather than rushing from one therapy appointment to another. In addition, Special Care has two Facility Dogs, Nacho and Costa, who are trained service dogs. Nacho and Costa provide support to the classrooms and therapists throughout the day.
